Opera House hits 40

Australia’s most famous building, the Sydney Opera House, is celebrating its 40th birthday with a week-long party of events that began with a concert.

In attendance were Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, marking the fact that the building was designed by the late Danish architect Jorn Utzon.

His design was picked after an international competition in the late 1950s. But arguments over costs and interior design led to his resignation.

The project was over budget, finished years late and beset by disputes, but the building, with its spectacular roof, has become one of the most famous in the world
