Leeds: A1 closed following HGV smash

A section of the A1 motorway was closed this morning during the small hours after two lorries collided.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the A1 southbound between Junctions 46 and 45 at 2.37am and found two HGVs in collision - one was on the grass verge, the other taking up two lanes.

Crews from Wetherby, Stanks, Cleckheaton and Tadcaster attended, together with police and ambulance personnel.

A spokesman from Wetherby Fire Station said today: “We were at the scene a couple of hours. Three people were trapped and had to be freed. They all suffered some injured and were taken to hospital.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
